The event will feature music performances by AF THE NAYSAYER, Otto, and DJ Nice Rack. 2 Complimentary cocktails provided by NOLA Distilling Company will be included with price of admission. “The New Orleans Society of Dance and the Louisiana State Museum present the premiere of “The Baby Doll Ladies of Mardi Gras,” a documentary film tracing the origins and transformations of the first women’s street masking practice in the US, ca. 1912. The film follows celebrated New Orleans Society of Dance founder and native Millisia White with the company as they work to serve as an example of hope and recover a once dormant piece of their city’s culture in the wake of the Hurricane Katrina floods. Attendees are invited to participate in a question and answer session with the company’s cultural dance artists and special guests. (Tickets are a $10.00 donation at the door. “Honoring the influence of jazz in the evolution of funk, Royal Sonesta New Orleans’ Jazz Playhouse will host seven premier entertainers in seven days with its first-ever Funk Week, from February 5 – 11, 2017. Performances begin nightly at 8:30 p.m. and are open to the public with no cover charge. With a decades-long career, George Porter Jr. is considered one of the forefathers of funk. As band leader of the Runnin’ Pardners and bassist of the funky METERS, Porter has also collaborated with musicians from Allen Toussaint and Earl King to Paul McCartney and Jimmy Buffett.
